Junior Partners in Policymaking (JPIP) is sponsored by the Delaware Developmental Disabilities Council, Delaware Department of Education, and the Administration on Developmental Disabilities. Training is provided by the Center for Disabilities Studies at the University of Delaware.

Junior Partners in Policymaking is held every other year for young adults aged 15 to 22.

JPIP participants will learn about:

  • The importance of self-determination.
  • Ways to self-advocate for the issues most important to them.
  • Their rights in and out of school.
  • Laws that affect how people are treated, especially individuals with disabilities.
  • How to make an impact on public policy (laws).
  • How to plan the future they want

In the evenings, participants have the opportunity to get together with other participants and enjoy a variety of entertainment together. JPIP participants stay in dorms, eat in the dining halls and attend classes at the University of Delaware.

2012 Partners in Policymaking

October 11th, 2011

Partners In Policymaking“Making a Difference for Delawareans who have Developmental Disabilities”

Partners in Policymaking is an innovative Leadership Training Program that teaches people to be community leaders. The program is designed for parents raising young or school-aged children with a developmental disability* or young adults with developmental disabilities.

“Partners” provides up-to-date information, education and skill building activities about the legislative process and local, state and national issues that affect individuals with disabilities.

“Partners” participants are people who are ready to work for change in public policy. The overall goal of the program is to foster a PARTNERship between people who need and use services for disabilities and those who make public policy. “Partners” graduates gain the abilities to teach policymakers a new way of thinking about people with disabilities.

Sessions are held on eight 2-day sessions in Dover, Delaware.  The 2012 dates are:

  • February 17-18
  • March 23-24
  • April 20-21
